The average Briton spends over £770 a year just travelling to the shops, before they have even bought anything according to new research by the TV and online shopping channel QVC. In the ten weeks leading up to Christmas the cost of going shopping is set to increase by 20 per cent with the average shopper forking out £185 before a single present is bought.

The rising costs of public transport, driving and parking are pushing increasing numbers to do their shopping online. QVC, revealed that that the average shopper will return at least four purchases throughout the year

Well over half of British adults (58 per cent) say they intend to shun the high street this Christmas and do the majority, if not all, of their gift shopping from the comfort of their sofa – online or TV shopping – as opposed to jostling on the pavement with the festive crowds.

Sue Leeson, marketing director of QVC, comments: “The stress, strain and expense involved with shopping on the high street takes the pleasure out of buying the perfect gifts for your loved ones. As a result, we have noticed an increasing shift towards online and TV shopping."

She added: “Buying under pressure often leads to shoppers not considering all of their purchases thoroughly which can lead to disappointment when they eventually relax and take a second look at home.
