| Sainsbury’s reports 48% surge in eyelash sales with double impact of Halloween and X Factor glamour. Sainsbury’s sales of false eyelashes soared by 48% year on year last week in the run up to Halloween, reflecting the trend set by X Factor hopefuls Katie Waissel and Cher Lloyd. Sales peaked on Friday 29th October when an extraordinary uplift of 60% was recorded as people began to plan their Halloween outfits. |

All of Sainsbury’s top ten beauty sellers last week were different brands of false eyelashes, with those promising particularly dramatic results amongst the most popular. For the first time since Sainsbury’s began to sell Girls Aloud branded eyelashes in May 2010, all five of the girls made it into the top ten, with Nicola squeaking in at number 10 – her first entry into the top ten.*
This extraordinary trend was continued, with two more brands of false eyelashes, eyelash dye and two brands of eyelash tweezers making up the 11-15 places in Sainsbury’s chart of beauty bestsellers.
‘I can only imagine that there were plenty of particularly glamorous witches and zombies out trick or treating this weekend’ said Sainsbury’s beauty category manager Rhian Bartlett. ‘It was certainly the right time of year to be batting eyelashes at handsome wizards”.
And while eyelash sales soared, Cheryl Cole continued to demonstrate her power as a style icon – after her head turning X Factor appearance with dramatic red hair, Sainsbury’s has also reported that sales of L’Oreals Casting Crème Gloss 550, the colour apparently used by Cheryl, have also increased by 10% yoy.
Within Sainsbury’s top ten beauty products this week, the Girls Aloud branded eyelashes performed as follows: Nadine (2), Kimberley (3), Cheryl (4), Sarah (8) and Nicola (10)
